- CCD - Charged Coupled Devices
- CCD Sensor - A high-end light sensor used to record images, which will normally record better or equal to the human eye.
- CCTV - Closed Circuit Televison.
- CMOS - Complementary metal oxide semiconductor
- CMOS Sensor - Light sensor used in video cameras to capture images, which is 10 times less sensitive than CCD sensors, although technology is changing where CMOS senors now compete in video quality with CCD sensors. CMOS sensors are normally used in web cameras and cell phones.
- DSP - Digital Signal Processor.
- DVR - Digital Video Recorder.
- FPSVideo frames per second.
- H.264 - A variant of MPEG-4, named MPEG-4 part 10, which is a high-end and superior in quality digital format.
- Hardware Video Compression - Video signal processing implemented on hardware, like a DSP.
- IP - Internet Protocol, an standard for network communications.
- IP Camera - IP cameras are digital cameras which use either CCD or CMOS light sensors, and present compressed digital data over the network like Ethernet or Wireless transports.
- LUX - A standard unit to measure a camera's sensitivity to light. The lower the number, the less light it will need to reproduce a clear image.
- MPEG-4 - A digital video compression standard, which is considered average in quality for todays market.
- NTSC Format - National Television Standards Committee. A video signal standard used in USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan.
- PAL - Phase Alternate Line. Video standard used in Europe.
- PTZ - Pan, tilt, and zoom. Describes a cameras actions.
- Software Video Compression - Digital data that is compressed using software instead of hardware (slower).
